We Don’t Have Transport Fares To Go To Work – ASUU President

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has said members of the body may find it difficult to get to their respective schools on Monday as they do not have “money for transport”

He disclosed this on Sunday while speaking about matters arising from the suspension of the ASUU strike on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Prof Osodeke said unlike those days when lecturers lived in staff quarters very close to campuses, most lecturers now live far away from the school campuses as most schools could not provide accommodation for them.

He said since they have not been paid for eight months, it would be difficult for them to afford the transport fares to their respective schools to teach students.

In schools those days, every lecturer lives on campus and you can trek to your office but these days, many lecturers live 20, 30 kilometres to their offices. How will they pay for their transport to work?

These are the issues we are going to have, that the branches will have to deal with. We expect the government to pay the money [eigth months salary arrers] so that these people will go back to work while we are negotiating on other issues.”

Confirming the suspension of the strike, he said “we suspended the strike hoping that the government will do the needful and by tomorrow, if the universities are open, hopefully, the lecturers will go back to work.

“We are resuming because we are obeying an industrial court judgement because the issues have not been fully resolved, no agreement signed.

We are also hoping that with the intervention of the Speaker [of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila], as promised by him, we will resolve this problem within a very short time.

Our lecturers will teach but you can’t expect someone who is owed eight months’ salary, maybe from his bank, he has collected more than N1m as a loan and you have not paid him one kobo and you want him to go to class and teach.

“I pray they go there because of the children and do the best they can do. You don’t expect a hungry man to go there [school] with an open mind.”

I Turned Lagos From Jungle To Megacity – Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has declared that he turned Lagos from a jungle to a megacity during his tenure as the governor of the state from 1999 to 2007.

In a programme that aired on Channels TV on Friday night, Tinubu said he laid the foundation that all other Lagos State governors after him built upon and are still building on to make the state what it is today.

He said:

“When I came in as governor of Lagos State in 1999, Lagos was a jungle. It was a completely uncivilised environment. There were refuse dumps everywhere, schools without roofs, hospitals without ambulances and oxygen tanks to save lives. It was in a very bad state.

“We started to put things in place gradually and the state began to take shape. What we did was to take the liabilities in the state and convert them to assets.

“Civic Centre to Oriental Hotel areas of Victoria Island were back then refuse dumps, but look at what the areas have turned to today. It is only the older ones who would remember all these.”

The mini documentary on Tinubu stated that the APC presidential candidate reengineered the revenue of the state and after he left the office of the governor in 2007, Lagos became completely autonomous from the Federal Government in terms of revenue generation having solely been dependent on federal allocations prior to 1999.

The internally generated revenue at the time was N600m monthly and the state was completely dependent on the Federal Government for it.

“When Tinubu was leaving office in 2007, the IGR of Lagos was N7bn monthly. Babatunde Fashola built on that legacy to N15bn monthly. This was made possible by the short, medium and long-term goals that Tinubu laid down for the state in terms of revenue and wealth generation,” the documentary revealed.

A short clip in the mini documentary also showed where the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), described Tinubu as a political strategist which drew him (Buhari) to Tinubu.

Buhari said:

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has set himself apart as a political strategist and a mountain of ideas which drew me to him. He is a true humanitarian and has contributed immensely to the success of Nigeria and Africa.”

A former governor of the state, Babatunde Fashola and the current governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in the programme, also gave credit to the APC presidential candidate for most of the projects that their administrations accomplished. They described Tinubu as the brain behind the developments in the state, adding that his tenure birthed most of the developments, long before they came in.

ASUU: FG Directs New Unions To Commence Teaching Immediately

Apparently, to whittle down the influence of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and ensure that it no longer retains the power to cripple academic activities in Nigerian universities, the Federal Government, through the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, on Tuesday, said it had registered two new unions of lecturers.

The two unions: Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) and Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), Ngige said, were registered after due consideration following series of letters written to the Ministry of Labour and Employment by the lecturers who made up the two new unions.

He said the lecturers had in the letters complained of ASUU’s maltreatment and further declared their interest to break away from their parent union.

Ngige, who made this known in his office in Abuja when he played host to the two unions, said that the Trade Union Act empowers him to regroup existing labour and pensioners’ unions.

He recalled that he had carried out a similar action when he regrouped the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) into three unions for the purpose of industrial harmony.

He added that the registration of the new unions is an action taken to ensure that no union will cripple Nigeria university education. He insisted that ASUU’s actions are not in favour of progressive tertiary education in the country.

“Trade Unions Act CAP. T14, Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 gives the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment powers to regroup an existing Trade Union of Worker or Employees.

“In the view of the above, I Senator Chris Ngige, in the exercise of the powers conferred on me as the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment, do hereby approve the registration of CONUA and NAMDA,” the minister said.

The minister further said that the unions now have equal rights with ASUU and will be invited to all events and negotiations involving university lecturers. He added that there are now three voices (unions) in the Nigerian tertiary education and that ASUU will no longer be the only voice that speaks for Nigerian lecturers.

He also noted that the unions applied for registration in 2017 and 2018 respectively, even as he insisted that the registration of the two unions doesn’t mean that ASUU no longer exists or that it will not enjoy its due rights.

“These associations will exist side by side with ASUU in the Nigerian universities in the spirit and tenets of International Labour Organisation (ILO) core convention. They are accordingly entitled to all rights and privileges accruing to such academic association/ organisation including but not limited to receiving check-off dues of their members,” Ngige said.

Furthermore, Ngige said that the Federal Government would still go on to negotiate with ASUU and resolve the lingering issues that led to the seven-month-old strike.

To the newly registered unions, Ngige asked them to resume academic activities in the universities without further delay.

He went on to warn the unions not to interfere in government business in the running of the universities.

In his response, the president of NAMDA, Dr Nosa Lance Orhue, said the registration has given medical and dental academicians in the university and other tertiary institutions, where training of medical students and postgraduate doctors takes place, a legal voice in the determination of the training requirements, management of the training system, and the welfare of her members. He appealed to the Federal Government and ASUU to quickly resolve the current strike in the universities.

Meanwhile, ASUU has described as frivolous the registration of the two new academic staff unions in universities, saying it is of no consequence to the ongoing industrial action by the union.

ASUU president, Professor Abuja Emmanuel Osodeke, stated this on Tuesday in Abuja in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in reaction to the presentation of registration certificates to CONUA and NAMDA by Chris Ngige.

He described Ngige as a desperate minister who is bent on frustrating the efforts of ASUU to fight for the welfare of its members and development of Nigeria university system.

He said:-

“As far as we are concerned, it is not worth responding to. They should go and reopen universities then. I don’t know why the minister is so desperate. He has tried all possible ways, he went to court and failed; he goes here and there and failed.

“Now it is registration of unions; they should register hundreds. Our members know what the union is fighting for, not for saboteurs, people who just want to work with government. It’s so sad. There is nothing to respond to. They should go and raise membership; government wants to use them to fight the university system.

“Even a child will see through what Ngige is doing. These people have been there. When people have problems with universities, corruption and all these things, they quickly raise those groups. That is what they have been doing all along, this has no consequence on our strike.”

National Coordinator of CONUA, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, had been advocating for registration of CONUA as a trade union just like ASUU, saying such development would break the monopoly being currently enjoyed by ASUU.

He had noted ASUU’s consistent strike has caused more harm than good in the university academic system. He accused ASUU of using strike as only tool to resolve its issues with the government, saying such development must stop, while adding that there were many ways of resolving issues.

The Lagos zone of ASUU, in a reaction, said it is not in any way disturbed that the Federal Government has registered CONUA as a trade union in the Nigerian university system.

The coordinator, Dr Adelaja Odukoya, said this on Tuesday when Nigerian Tribune asked for ASUU’s reaction to the CONUA’s registration, four years after application for same.

He said he would not want to say much on the matter because it is irrelevant but would simply describe the Federal Government’s action as “shooting a gun at nothing”.

Similarly, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) chided the Federal Government for registering CONUA, saying the action is just to create more confusion and crisis in Nigerian public university system. National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Giwa Yisa Temitope, told the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday that the registration was absolutely unnecessary, adding that the registration of another union among lecturers, particularly now, by the Federal Government is a demonstration of the failure of the current administration.

Joeboy Reacts To Asa’s N300M Copyright Infringement Notice

Joeboy has displayed zero cowardice after Asa and her team notified him about N300m suit over alleged copyright infringement.

Nigerian ace singer and songwriter, Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus, popularly known as Joeboy, has reacted to the copyright infringement notice that was sent to him by award-winning singer Asa.

Joeboy, on August 19, 2022, released the second single of the year, an afro-fusion tune titled “Contour,” which was produced by ace beat maker Tempoe.

A few weeks after the release of the song, Joeboy was allegedly served a notice which claimed that the song “Contour” infringed on the copyright of Asa. According to the letter, “Contour” infringed on the copyright of a musical composition which was created by Asa in a recording session which took place on September 22nd, 2022, with Tempoe in attendance at that said session.

The notice, which was served on September 30th, demanded that Joeboy remove the song from all digital platforms within twenty-four hours, issue a written apology, pay N300 million, and assign Asa a sixty-percent publishing split.

Joeboy, who posted the letter on his Instagram page on Monday, October 3rd, 2022, merely laughed off the notice. The singer went on to challenge Asa to take another step following the issued notice. He wrote:

Cos i dey always do love and light you think sey i be soft meat

You said i have 24 hours, it’s been 48hours, do something.

Kunle Afolayan Reveals How Much It Cost Him to Make His New Movie Anikulapo

Veteran Nollywood filmmaker and actor Kunle Afolayan recently spoke about his latest movie Anikulapo, which is set to be the third of his Netflix original in the last two years.

Afolayan in a chat with Oke-Hortons Nosa said the movie is a surreal portrayal of the Yoruba culture and beliefs based on the Ifa mythology.

Kunle said:

“The backdrop story of this movie is from Ifa, and then we added a bit of Yoruba mythology to it. The film is basically meant to tell help people get to understand more about our culture, our beliefs, and our ways. It will to portray what the Yoruba empire use to be like back in those days governance wise and the lifestyle.”

When Kunle was asked to give an estimated value of what it cost to produce Anikulapo, he said that bringing all of his ideas for the film to life cost him a lot of money.

He further revealed that the entire set the movie was shot on was built from scratch, and after shooting, he intends to turn the place into a film village. Below is an excerpt of Afolayan’s reply:

“I don’t have a definite figure, but it was a lot of money, lot and lot of money.”
