Kwara Police Arrest Five Suspected Kidnappers For Allegedly Killing NSCDC Officer

Five suspected kidnappers have been arrested and paraded by the Kwara State Police Command.

Parading the suspects at the command headquarters in Ilorin on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Paul Odama, said they belong to two separate notorious gangs.

Members of the first gang include Babagida Buguda, 30, described as a kingpin, Bashiru Yakuba, 35, and Mohammed Umaru, 26.

The CP said the three suspect were arrested on December 20, 2022, in Oro-Ago, Ifelodun Local Government of the state.

According to the police boss, the trio confessed to have killed NSCDC officer, Inspector Segun Ayebulu and kidnapped his family members.

Exhibits recovered from them included two locally made guns and two mobile phones.

“On 9th November 2022, at about 5:45 pm, one Mr Shina Luke Abiodun of Eruku town in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, and one other, while riding on a motorcycle on their way from Egbe in Kogi State were accosted at Koro village close to Eruku town by men numbering about six, who emerged from the bush armed with guns and other dangerous weapons,”
 he said.

“The hoodlums opened fire on them and they sustained gunshot injuries. They, however, escaped the attack and ran to the Anti-Kidnapping patrol team stationed at Eruku town.

“The team moved to the scene and one Tecno phone was recovered. Forensic analysis of the phone by the investigators led to the arrest of the kingpin and two of his gang members in Oro-Ago, Ifelodun LGA, Kwara state on 20th December 2022.”

The police commissioner said the suspects confessed during interrogation to have been responsible for kidnapping operations within Ekiti, Kogi and Kwara states respectively.

“One of their victims and his six-year-old son came from Ekiti State to identify and confirmed that they were kidnapped and held captive for six days by the suspects and were released after payment of N6m.

“The suspects also confessed to have also killed one Inspector Segun Ayegbulu of the NSCDC attached to Ekiti Command,” the police commissioner added.

He said further Investigation into the matter led to the recovery of two locally made pistols, while efforts are also ongoing to arrest the fleeing members of the gang and recover the remaining firearms in their possession.

The second gang of suspected kidnappers comprising Garuba Abubakar, aka Elero of Lokongoma village and Abubakar Adam of Ile Nam, Oke-Ode, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, were arrested for the alleged kidnap of 15-year-old Abubakar Mohammed along Oke-Ode -Share Road in Ifelodun Local Government of Kwara State.

“On 12th December 2022, intelligence available to the command indicated that one Abubakar Mohammed, 15, was kidnapped along Oke-Ode – Share road, Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State,”

The report prompted the Commissioner of Police to dispatch a team of State Intelligent Bureau (SIB) and conventional Police from the Oke-Ode Division.

A diligent investigation led to the arrest of Garuba Abubakar aka Elero of Lokongoma village and Abubakar Adam of Ile Nam Oke-Ode, Ifelodun LGA, Kwara State who are members of the kidnap gang.

He disclosed that they confessed to having collected the N500,000 ransom paid by the victim.

CP Odama added that the leader of the gang, identified as Chairman Rabiu who is presently at large, is said to be in possession of the gang’s firearm and always took custody of all ransom collected as confessed by two arrested suspects.

Efforts are in top gear to get him arrested, while all the suspects would soon be charged to court soon, he stated.

The police commissioner who vowed that the command will make Kwara State uncomfortable for criminals advised them to leave the state.

CBN Releases Security Features Of New Naira Notes As Fake Circulates

Some of the security features the CBN hopes will aid in the easy identification of fake notes include touch, visibility, the security thread and the watermark.

As the new naira notes circulate, the Central Bank of Nigeria has released the security features of the newly released notes to aid in identifying fake notes.

The N1,000 note has 23 security features, the N500 note has 15 security features, while the N200 note has 10 security features.

Some of the security features the CBN hopes will aid in easy identification of fake notes include touch, visibility, the security thread and the watermark.

Other areas such as the portrait, lettering and the denominational numerals on the obverse and reverse of the notes are embossed.

A soft texture and dull image are indicators of a fake naira. That means one should be sensitive to the touch of the banknote when carrying out a transaction.

There is also need to observe the gold foil on the right side, close to the CBN governor’s signature. One can also differentiate the genuine naira note from counterfeit by applying liquid to the note, and a fake currency can easily change colour.

Also, the ribbon-like thread on all Naira notes can also be observed and touched to confirm if the note is genuine or otherwise.

One can also raise a naira notes on a mercury bulb. This exercise enables the one to see many features of the local currency, not visible to the naked eyes, among others.

The Naira notes are also protected against photocopying. There are also features, which are visible under ultraviolet light; for example, the serial number on each banknote is black, but turns green under ultraviolet light.

Doyin Okupe has stepped down from his position as the director-general of the Labour Party presidential campaign council.

Okupe’s resignation comes hours after he was convicted over money laundering charges.

2023: What I’ll Do About Okupe’s Conviction – Peter Obi

What I’ll Do About Okupe’s Conviction – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has said the conviction of his Campaign Organisation’s Director-General, Doyin Okupe, over money laundering would not break his resolve to be Nigeria’s President.

Mr Obi said this while speaking with journalists in Uyo at the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, on Monday.

The LP presidential candidate said he was undaunted by the conviction and would continue with his campaign and allow the due process of law to take its course.

“I am hearing about it (the conviction) just like you. I am still studying what is coming out of the court and everything. I believe in the rule of law. It is not going to demoralise me.

“Today, when I arrived Akwa Ibom somebody asked me why I haven’t been using my aircraft because it has been grounded and all that, and I said to him that nothing demoralises me.

“In my life, I have never stayed where they dropped me, otherwise, I would have been where they dropped me before.

“This election, if they like, let them do anything about people who are around me. I will get there,” Mr Obi said.

According to PremiumTimes report, on the impression that he does not have the political structure to win the presidential election, he said he was determined to dismantle the existing political structure in the country which encouraged corruption and spread poverty among Nigerians.

“The structure they have today is the structure we want to destroy. It is the structure of criminality. It is the structure that produced 133 million people living in poverty.

“It is the structure that produced 20 million out-of-school children. It is the structure that has made Nigeria surpass India in infant mortality. It is the structure that will destroy Nigeria and we want to destroy that structure,” he said.

Mr Obi said his priority would be how to secure a united Nigeria and pull people out of poverty.

He said if elected the president of the country come 2023, he would work towards the realisation of the Ibaka Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom.

“My problem is how to create a future and make Nigeria a productive and not a consuming nation,” he added.

Banks Run Out Of New Naira, Demand Soars

Banks Run Out Of New Naira, Demand Soars

As expected, lots of mixed reactions have greeted the disbursement of the new naira notes by the Central Bank.

The new notes officially went into circulation on Thursday.

While many bank customers demanding for the new notes, a few others snubbed the latest bills in banking halls across major Nigerian cities.

The newly redesigned N1,000, N500 and N200 bills finally became a legal tender on December 15, 2022, over three weeks after the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), unveiled them at the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, had on October 26 announced plans to redesign the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes, while also declaring that the old denominations would cease to be a legal tender by January 31, 2022.

Emefiele stressed that the redesigning of the local currency became necessary to tackle inflationary problems, currency counterfeiting, insecurity and other issues plaguing Nigeria.

He further noted that the currency redesign was aimed at controlling currency-in-circulation as well as ransom payments to kidnappers and terrorists.

Our correspondents, who visited banking halls in several cities across the country, especially in Lagos and Abuja on Thursday, observed that several bank branches had run out of the small quantities of the new notes allocated to them from their head offices as early as 12 noon.

Further findings revealed that several bank branches were yet to get their new note allocations with many bank officials informing our correspondents that the new notes were still being expected.

In bank branches visited in Lagos, a number of the bank branches had run out of their new note allocations when our correspondents visited the places. However, officials at some of the centres which still had the new notes told The PUNCH their allocations were very small.

An official of Access Bank Plc at the Ojodu branch in Lagos, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said, “Each cashier was given N100,000 of the new N1,000 bill for onward disbursements to customers seeking over-the-counter payments.  We don’t have the other denominations of N500 and N200 yet. We don’t have enough supply of the new notes for now.”

Also, our correspondent observed that the ATMs at the bank branch were dispensing only old naira notes.

Customers were also seen depositing the old bills over the counter, while cashiers were paying out more of the old naira notes at the centre.

However, in a few instances, the cashiers were seen mixing a few new naira notes with the old bills in their OTC payments.

Meanwhile, in some of the banking halls visited by our correspondents, some customers snubbed the new notes due to reports that some local traders were rejecting them as legal tender.

As such, some of the bank customers refused to collect the new notes for over-the-counter payments.

Confirming the situation, a bank teller in Ogba, Lagos told one of our correspondents that, “Some customers have been rejecting the new naira notes whenever we give them; they said the new notes would not be collected from them in the market; they prefer the old notes.”

At the bank, a cashier told a customer demanding the new notes she had exhausted her allocation.

However, when the customer insisted on having his payment in the new notes, the cashier approached his colleague to demand for some.

“You are eager to get the new notes but many of the customers I attended to today refused to take it from me,” the cashier said.

Abuja banks

In the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, only one of the 10 bank branches visited paid their customers using the new notes. Also, only one of the ATM centre dispensed the new naira notes among the several ATM galleries visited by one of our reporters in the FCT.

The PUNCH visited the Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Taj Bank and Access Bank Plc situated at Jabi Garage and the Central Business District.

None of the tellers in the bank branches was seen paying their customers in the new notes via the counters.

However, only the Access Bank ATM in the area was seen dispensing new N1,000 and N500 notes.

Our correspondent observed that the ATM dispensed N1,000 in every N10,000 withdrawal.

At GTBank, Jabi branch, our correspondent observed that the ATM dispensed old N1,000 notes to customers.

At the counter of the same bank, a bank official who declined to give her name told The PUNCH that the new notes were not available.

She said, “No, you can’t make cash withdrawals of the new notes. The best we can do for you is to mix the amount you are withdrawing with old notes.”

When our correspondent approached another official of the bank, she said OTC withdrawals were still being honoured in the old notes.

At the Zenith Bank, Jabi branch, an official asked our correspondent to come back on Friday or Monday for the new notes.

According to him, the new notes have yet to be distributed to the branch, adding they are hopeful it will get to the branch soon.

Our correspondent overheard a customer complaining of not being able to get the new notes despite withdrawing a huge sum of money at the branch.

A similar scenario was witnessed at the First Bank and Taj Bank branches as officials said the new notes were not available when our correspondent visited the centres.

At Taj Bank, an official who refused to give his name, claimed the lender was disbursing the new notes to customers over the counter but not at its ATM stand.

However, as of 3:45pm when our correspondent visited the branch, only old notes were being given to their customers.

Lagos banking halls

Also, during a visit to some banks in the Ikotun-Egbe and Isolo areas of Lagos, it was observed that the ATMs were dispensing old notes.

A customer at First Bank ATM in Ikotun-Egbe said, “The ATMs are still not dispensing the new currency here, what we still collect is the old ones.”

A Point of Sale terminal operator in Igando area, who simply identified himself as Chibuike, said he could not get the new notes when he visited his bank earlier in the day.

Also, when The PUNCH visited the First Bank branch at Yaba, Lagos, the ATMs were still dispending the old notes.

It was also observed that OTC payments were being made using the old notes.

A bank customer Mr James Oni, told our correspondent he was anticipating to see the new notes, adding that he could not get it in the banking hall.

Also, when our correspondent visited the FCMB branch on Matthew Street, Yaba, only the old notes were being dispensed from the ATMs while OTC payments were also done using the old currency.

Meanwhile, our correspondent observed that several bank customers in Lagos and Ogun states could not access the new notes in their bank branches as of Thursday. However, others who were lucky got the new bills. Some customers expressed hope they would be able to see the new currencies in the coming days.

Court Sentences Enugu Lady To Five Years Imprisonment For Child Abuse

An Enugu State High Court has sentenced an employee of the Central Bank of Nigeria Jude Ozuogu and his wife, Ifeoma Ozuogu to 13 years imprisonment for child abuse.

The couple were found guilty of inflicting bodily harm on their 10-year-old home help.

Ifeoma was 24 at the time she was arrested in 2020 alongside her husband, Jude Ozuogu, by personnel of the Enugu command of the Nigeria Police Force.

The victim, Nneoma Nnadi, was abused for allegedly causing the couple’s baby to fall to the ground.

The convict was also accused of inserting pepper into the little girl’s private parts and locking her up in the toilet for refusing to wash plates.

Ozuogu used hot pressing iron, knife, nail and hammer to inflict injuries on the little girl.

The incident happened at Aku in the Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the state.

Nnadi was said to have carried her mistress’ little baby to pamper her to sleep around midnight when the baby mistakenly fell to the ground.

Though there was no physical or internal injury suffered by the baby, Ozuogu descended heavily on the girl over the incident by burning her skin with a hot pressing iron and also driving a nail into her head.

The following day, Ozuogu inserted pepper into the little girl’s vagina and locked her up in the toilet for refusing to wash plates.

It took the intervention of neighbours, who heard the girl’s cry, to rescue and rush her to the hospital for treatment.

Consequently, the neighbours reported the incident to the police, which swiftly arrested her. Her husband, Jude was also arrested for being an accomplice to the crime.

Thereafter, they were arraigned before Justice A. C. Ogbuabor of State High Court 10 on three counts bordering on inflicting grievous harm, administering noxious or piousness substance and employment of a child as a domestic worker.

Delivering judgment in the suit marked No: HE/121c/2020 between the State (Plaintiff/Applicant and Jude Ozuogu and Ifeoma Ozuogu (1 & 2 Defendants), the court convicted them.

Condemning the treatment meted out to the 10-year-old girl, the court sentenced the couple to 13 years imprisonment (total individual tally) each.

Justice Ogbuabor convicted the couple on all three counts and sentenced them accordingly. On count one – Inflicting grievous harm, the court sentenced them to three years imprisonment.

On count two – administering a noxious or poisonous substance, the court sentenced the couple to five years imprisonment and on count three – employment of a child as a domestic worker, the court sentenced the couple to five years imprisonment.

The court, however, ordered that the period the convicts had stayed in custody from the day of arrest should be discounted. “All sentences shall run concurrently,” the judge so held.

Show Of Shame’ — Nigerians React To Tinubu’s Chatham House Conversation

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, has apparently dodged most of the questions from the audience after his appearance at Chatham House, stirring negative reactions among many Nigerians.

Mr Tinubu, who was at the United Kingdom’s elite foreign and policy think-tank institution, spoke about his plans for security, economy, and foreign policy for Nigeria if elected president next year.

Asked about how he intended to tackle challenges plaguing the country, the APC standard bearer seemingly dodged questions, directing some members of his entourage to respond to the questions.

Mr Tinubu said the decision to assign these questions to the team members was a sign of teamwork.

In a video circulating on Twitter, Mr Tinubu was heard saying: “I have an unbreakable team. To demonstrate that, I would choose the first question assigned to Dele Alake, and the second assigned to Nasir El-Rufai, and the third question to Ben Ayade.”

Reacting to the development, some Nigerians on social media expressed their disappointment with the former Lagos State governor’s seeming inability to answer the questions posed before him.

Below are some of the reactions:

@VictorIsreal, tweeted “Omo! They asked Tinubu questions and he directed El-Rufai and Ayade to answer the questions. He said he believes in teamwork. Imagine asking Peter Obi a question on national TV and he directs Kenneth Okonkwo to answer it. That’s how ridiculous It sounded. Nigerians open your eyes.”.

Another user @FemiOyedun1, said the APC candidate would never win the election, “For every question directed to the APC presidential candidate at the Chatham House. Dele Alake, El Rufai, and Ben Ayade are the ones answering, he even eyes Sanwoolu to answer a certain question. He said it was teamwork. By God’s grace, Bola Tinubu won’t be Nigeria’s president.”

@Ifedapo Daniel, noted that the ex-Lagos governor is a major disaster, Nigerians must avoid in 2023,”

“Bola Tinubu is the biggest disaster Nigerians must avoid in 2023! He was being asked questions at the Chatham House, his proxies were the ones answering! How did we get here? At this point, if you’re planning to vote for APC, thunder must strike you down oo!”, he tweeted.

Another user, Princeujay, said “Dele Alake, El-Rufai, and Ben Ayade had to borrow Tinubu their brains to answer questions at the Chatham House in London. National humiliation and shame to APC to have a brain-dead man as a Presidential candidate”.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the PDP presidential campaign council Daniel Bwala, described Mr Tinubu’s Chatham House appearance as a show of shame.

He said: “Chatham House show of shame. You want to be the president but avoiding answering questions, instead, you are re-directing the answers to El-Rufai, Alake, and co.

“Nigerians want to be governed by a person, not a robot who cannot exercise independent thought in answering questions”
