Drogba, Mikel react to UEFA Champions League

0

Didier Drogba has declared himself the “luckiest man” in the UEFA Champions League after the round of 16 draw paired his Galatasaray A? side with the team he helped win the trophy in 2012.

“What a draw. I’m the luckiest man in the Champions League. I’ll play both games at home. See you in a few months”.

Drogba-yelow

Meanwhile, John Obi Mikel has expressed his delight to be playing against Drogba in February.

“I’m sure [Didier Drogba] will text very soon, it will be great to have him back. We shouldn’t get carried away about him coming back; he is a player that was here for eight years, he won major trophies, he’s a big player with a big personality. Obviously he had to move on but Chelsea continue, we have to win games, he’s coming here with his new club Galatasaray who we want to beat, so we shouldn’t get carried away about him coming back. We want to win the game.

“They are a great team. Didier, Wesley [Sneijder], they have a good team and obviously they have Roberto Mancini who is trying to implement his philosophy and change the way they play. It will be tough but it’s a game we’re looking forward to.

“It will be good to meet old rivals, who you have played against in the past, as well as old team-mates. We know what to expect from their fans. They will be right behind their team and support them but it’s up to us not to listen to them and make sure we go out there and play our game.

ASUU strike: Top 5 losers and gainers

0

No doubt that the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of
Universities(ASUU) has been a nationalistic fight to finish, it came
at a loss to the country. This is as voted by students, the top 5
losers of the ASUU strike:

1. Students- Aside being academically dormant for over 5months, thus
raising the fear of mass failure during exams expected to be rushed
within the months of January to February next year, while some have
lost their lives or dignity indulging in one criminal activity or
another, others are growing lean wondering how to tackle their house
rents at school, that have most likely expired, with the academic year
uncompleted. The strike will also delay these current finalists from
making the February/March NYSC batch, pushing them to June and
November.

2. Campus Businesses- Even here at Abia State University, the standard
of living of the canteen operators have dropped. So also have times
become rough for the motorcycle riders, photocopy shops,
photographers, other businesses and even churches on campus.

3. Lecturers- Most of them were financially stranded by september when
their nursery, primary and secondary school children had to return to
school with no money for fees, uniform and books, owing to no salary
and no proceeds from sale of textbooks and handouts.

4. Federal Government- The ultimatum that didn’t work showed how weak
the FG is and set a bad precedent for other unions to follow.

5. President Goodluck Jonathan- This charade was bad for his political
ambition of vying for second term, as well as for his political party
PDP presidentially.

The top 5 gainers however were:

1. Newspapers- Most newspapers especially those online enjoyed an
influx of new customers reading updates on ASUU strike.

2. Vice Chancellors- They sat and watch ASUU struggle to make huge
sums available to them to improve their various varsities. Some of
these funds will be diverted for personal use of course.

3. Facebook- There was an increase in the use of facebook by Nigerian
Public University students this period.

4. Lecturers- They are to be paid for not working, not being stresses,
and shall enjoy earned allowances most of them probably lost hope of
getting, or didn’t know they were entitled to earn.

5. Hostel/Lodge Landlords- They will earn payment for emergency
periods of learning. The quest to retain one’s room for the rest of
the semester or session ie. January to whenever, might force some to
pay for a year they may not complete in that lodge.

Going through the above, it is clear that the strike had more negative
consequences than positive. Economically, Nigeria was at loss for this
strike.

Villas-Boas sacked by Tottenham

Villas-Boas sacked by Tottenham

Tottenham have confirmed that manager Andre Villas-Boas has been sacked following Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool at White Hart Lane.

The defeat leaves Spurs in seventh place in the Premier League table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal and comes less than a month after they were thrashed 6-0 by Manchester City.

Goal reported last week that the relationship between Villas- Boas and Daniel Levy had deteriorated to the point where he was no longer expected to remain at White Hart Lane beyond this season.

But following Sunday’s humiliation Levy, who looked less than
impressed watching from the executive box, has decided to take immediate action.

“The club can announce that agreement has been reached with
Head Coach, Andre Villas-Boas, for the termination of his services,” a statement read.

“The decision was by mutual consent and in the interests of all parties.”

Drogba: I'm the luckiest man in the Champions League

The Ivorian was thrilled to get the opportunity to play at Stamford Bridge once again when his Galatasaray side face Chelsea in the last 16 Didier Drogba has branded himself the “luckiest man” in the Champions League after Galatasaray were drawn against Chelsea in the last 16.

The Cote d’Ivoire international – who played more than 340 games for Chelsea in a stellar career for the London club – admitted he was relishing the prospect of returning to Stamford Bridge for Roberto Mancini’s men when the sides lock horns in the new year.

Jose Mourinho admitted prior to Monday’s draw that Drogba deserved the chance to receive a warm ovation from the Blues faithful and Drogba suggested that both legs of the tie would have the feel of a home game.

“What a draw… I’m the luckiest man in this competition,” he wrote on his official Instagram account.

“In both games I’ll be playing home! See you in few months.”

Drogba left Chelsea in the summer of 2012 a club hero having scored in the Champions League final to take the game to spot-kicks before subsequently burying the winning penalty for the Blues against Bayern Munich.

After spending a short time in China, the Ivorian returned to Europe with a transfer to the Turk Telekom Arena at the start of 2013.

Drogba has been linked in some quarters with a possible move back to Chelsea during the January transfer window, though the striker himself claimed there was “no way” he would leave the Istanbul giants next month following the crucial win over Juventus.

Neymar making light of Messi absence

0

Neymar stepping up to make light of Messi absence

Barcelona’s Brazilian forward will miss the Catalans’ Liga clash at Getafe next weekend after he picked up his fifth booking of the season in his side’s 2-1 over Villarreal on Saturday. But before that, the 21- year-old once again made the difference in the continued absence of Lionel Messi.

As said with increased regularity of late, this was not vintage Barca, but boss Gerardo Marino was pleased to see his side come through another tricky test without their star man. As Messi continues his recovery from a troublesome hamstring problem in Argentina, Neymar was there to round off a wonderful week with two more crucial strikes.

“This is the victory which satisfies me most,” Martino said afterwards.

“We miss Messi and our rivals are happy when he is not playing. We don’t only miss him when we lose, we always miss him. And if he had been here, we would have played better.”

For the moment, however, he is not, and Barca must win however they can. For the second match in a row, Neymar provided the inspiration.

Following his maiden hat-trick for the Catalan club on Wednesday against Celtic in a 6-1 Champions League win, the Brazilian hit a double for the first time in La Liga on Saturday to claim all three points for the Catalans.

Back on the left this time as Cesc Fabregas returned from his midweek suspension, the 21-year-old opened the scoring from the penalty spot following a contentious call by referee Ignacio Iglesias Villanueva, who pointed to the spot after Jordi Alba’s cross struck Manolo Gaspar’s right hand. “I’d like us to get penalties like that,” Villarreal coach Marcelino Garcia Toral complained
afterwards.

His side equalised through Mateo Musacchio, when the centre-back outmuscled opposite number Marc Bartra to head home from a corner which Barca should have dealt with early in the second half, but Neymar was on hand to tap in the winner after good work by Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez (who had both earlier missed good chances) to make it 2-1.

The Brazilian then set up Pedro for a good chance which the Spain forward flashed into the side netting from an angle and rasped a fierce drive onto the crossbar himself following a darting run and one-two with Sergi Roberto late on which so nearly brought him a second straight hat-trick.

The 21-year-old’s memorable night was only soured by the yellow card he picked up for taking a corner too quickly in the closing stages. “I don’t know what happened, I don’t understand it,” he said afterwards. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

It was Neymar’s fifth booking in La Liga and means he will miss the trip to Getafe next weekend, while he is also likely to sit out the Copa del Rey clash at home to Segunda B side Cartagena in midweek as Barca lead 4-1 from the away leg.

On the evidence of the last two games, he too will be missed.

Rooney urges Man Utd to ‘step up’

Rooney urges Man Utd to 'step up'

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says his side must “step up” after a poor run that has seen them slump to ninth place in the Premier League.

The reigning champions have lost their last two league games, to Newcastle and Everton, and travel to Villa Park on Sunday to face Aston Villa with Rooney urging his side to improve.

“We all have to step up,” he told reporters. “It hasn’t been good enough of late and we all have to come forward and show why we were champions last year and do better.

“We have a good run of games now and hopefully we can do that.”

Despite United’s inconsistent form, Rooney has been impressive this season, scoring 10 times already for the Red Devils, but the England international is unconcerned by his own individual displays.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the team. If the team isn’t doing well then my form is not important – we have to do well as a team and roll our sleeves up and really pull ourselves together,” he added.

“We haven’t won the games or put ourselves in a position where we can win some games.

“The Everton game [a 1-0 home defeat], we probably had the best chances and lost the game – and that is all you look at.

“We have to be realistic now and try to climb up that table and see where are in four, six or eight games’ time.

“It’s not nice. We are all proud players and it’s not nice being there. It hurts. Hopefully there will be a reaction.”

Rooney was at a loss to explain United’s form this season, which has seen them lose five times already in the Premier League, but says it is important the team returning to winning ways.

“We don’t know why it has happened but it has happened and as a group of players we have to do better. We are not playing at our best and we have to start doing it,” he continued.

“It’s disappointing to be where we are in the league but there are a lot of games left and a lot of points to play for.

“Especially at the moment we have to take each game as it comes and just keep trying to get three points in each game. Whether that is a 1-0 victory, we have to take it and keep trying to climb up the table.”

Brazil faces WC stadium crisis

Workers set to strike over World Cup stadium deaths

Preparations for the tournament in Brazil have taken another hit, after a workers union publicly denounced safety conditions around building sites.

A death of a second worker at a World Cup construction site in Brazil on Saturday could be set to spark a nationwide strike amongst fellow builders.

The man collapsed following a heart attack while working around the Amazonas Convention Center, within the Arena Amazonia stadium compound.

The workers union the casualty belonged to has been vocal with their anger at safety conditions on sites and Brazil could face a crisis ahead of the tournament if tradesmen down tools in protest.

“A general strike would be ideal, to show the reality that nobody wants to see,” Sintracomec-AM president Cicero Custodio told Globoesporte .

“The government only shows the pretty part of the works and forgets who’s there making them happen.

This Monday we will be there, demanding our rights as workers and exposing this reality.

“The accident happened because there wasn’t a safety technician on site. The Labour Ministry has to get off their chairs and audit the works, even when there are people working at night.”

This tragedy comes immediately after news that co-worker Marcleudo de Melo Ferreira had plunged to his death in the same stadium on Saturday.

Stadium construction projects have been plagued with mishaps, with a falling crane recently claiming the lives of two builders in Sao Paolo on November 27.

The Brazilian government faces a race against time to ensure infrastructure is ready to support the World Cup in
June 2014, following delays, increased costs and nationwide unrest.

Chelsea close gap to two points

Chelsea close gap to two points

Petr Cech made a string of second-half saves as Chelsea hung on to edge past a rejuvenated Crystal Palace and move within two points of leaders Arsenal.

Fernando Torres tapped in to put the Blues ahead at Stamford Bridge after Willian’s shot rebounded off a post.

Palace equalised via Marouane Chamakh’s volley from a Joel Ward cross before Ramires curled Chelsea back in front.

Cech denied Jason Puncheon, Damien Delaney and, crucially, Stuart O’Keefe as the hosts scdefiled to victory.

That said, the home side had two glorious late chances to relieve the tension, only for Ramires to miscue on both occasions.

Boss Jose Mourinho said Chelsea were “in trouble” after losing at Stoke last weekend, but they are now within touching distance of the top.

While it is a contrasting picture for Palace, who remain in the relegation zone, they should take heart from another encouraging performance.

The improved organisation and confidence they have shown since Tony Pulis took over as manager last month was evident throughout – and they will be disappointed that a sequence of three wins in four games and four clean sheets in five matches has come to an end.

With a well-drilled back four, the calming influence of captain Mile Jedinak in midfield and a two-pronged attack in Chamakh and Cameron Jerome, the Eagles posed a constant threat.

But their impressive work was undone when Willian was given too much time and space to produce a low strike that Julian Speroni pushed on to a post, Torres reacting quickly to convert the rebound.

Branislav Ivanovic then drilled narrowly wide for the hosts from an acute angle after collecting a Juan Mata backheel and bursting into the box.

But Palace maintained their composure as Chelsea struggled to establish a consistent tempo, and they were rewarded when Ward’s left-wing centre was guided into the bottom corner by Chamakh.

The equaliser was deserved but Chelsea’s creative players gradually started to increase their influence – Willian, Mata, Eden Hazard and the ever-energetic Ramires linking effectively with lone striker Torres.

It was Willian and Hazard who combined to tee up Ramires and he restored the hosts’ advantage with a superb bending effort that Speroni, unsighted by defenders, could do nothing to keep out.

Willian squandered a chance to extend the lead before half-time and it was Palace who rallied after the break, Cech beating away a Puncheon shot before saving Delaney’s header.

Manchester City put six past Arsenal

Manchester City put six past
Arsenal

Manchester City delivered an ominous message to their Premier League title rivals as leaders Arsenal were thrashed.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side closed the gap on the Gunners to three points with another in a growing list of devastating attacking displays at home this season.

And they have piled on the agony for North London’s two contenders as Arsenal suffered following City’s recent 6-0 demolition of Tottenham.

The visitors may point to some questionable offside calls and a rejected penalty claim – but in reality they were ultimately blown away by the sheer firepower of a City side who have now scored 35 league goals at
home this season and in 58 consecutive games at Etihad Stadium.

City are not simply beating teams at home, they are dismantling them and if they can replicate part of this
form away from home they must surely be title favourites.

Sergio Aguero’s early goal was cancelled out by Theo Walcott but Alvaro Negredo put City back in front
before half-time.

City’s potency was not reduced by a calf injury to Aguero, with Fernandinho extending their lead before Walcott’s second restored some optimism for Arsene
Wenger’s side.

But the hosts were coming at Arsenal from all angles, with David Silva and Fernandinho again finding the target before Per Mertesacker’s header made it 5-3 in stoppage time.

City’s brilliance deserved the final word – and so it proved as Yaya Toure’s penalty gave them another six goals in what is become a catalogue of virtuoso performances at home.

As expected, City manager Pellegrini restored Costel Pantilimon in goal, despite Joe Hart playing his part in
the midweek Champions League win against holders Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena.

Aguero has been City’s spearhead and he was at it again after only 13 minutes, showing perfect technique
once more to sweep in a right-foot volley after Martin Demichelis had flicked on Samir Nasri’s corner.

Inter revenge not on Benitez’s mind

0
image
Inter revenge not on Benitez's mind

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez is determined to extend the gap between Inter and themselves, but distanced himself from suggestions that revenge was on his mind.

Benitez was successor to Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter side back in 2010 but, despite lifting the Club World Cup and Supercoppa Italiana, he lasted only six months in the job before former club president Massimo Moratti ended his reign.

The Spaniard’s Partenopei are four points ahead of the Nerazzurri and Benitez has the opportunity to show it was a mistake to let the 53-year-old leave San Siro.

When asked if revenge was on his mind, Benitez dodged the question and instead insisted he only wants to stretch the gap to seven points, he told reporters: “I know that if we win there is greater distance between the Nerazzurri and ourselves and it is crucial for us to be ahead. I’m not thinking about revenge.

“Should the fans applaud or jeer Mazzarri? If I were a fan, I’d just applaud Napoli. I would focus only on helping the team that I support. It will be a difficult game and if a fan goes to the San Paolo, he does it only to cheer on Napoli.”

Benitez also believes that Inter – like second-placed Roma – are at advantage because they do not have European football to contend with this season.

“Inter are a strong team, one of the most prestigious in Italy,” he continued. “Roma and Inter – as I said at the beginning of the season – have an advantage because they were the top teams to only have to play once per week [because they don’t have European football].

“Against Lazio we had the right intensity, now we must do so with Inter and Cagliari, the team can do it and we will see it on the field.”

Meanwhile, Napoli have concerns with Goran Pandev, Valon Behrami and Pepe Reina and will be evaluated before Sunday’s game.

City Have a Strong Squad, I Look at My Squad and Don’t Envy Them- Wenger.

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said he does not envy Manchester City’s squad as both teams prepare to meet at the Etihad Stadium in Saturday’s Premier League early afternoon kick-off.

BT98WDZCMAAhzjA

City, who were champions last two seasons, spent over £48m more than the current league leaders in signing five new players during the summer in a bid to boost the squad which failed to clinch any silverware last season.

While the North London outfit, who has enjoyed a robust level of income since moving into the Emirate Stadium of recent, paid Real Madrid £42.4m for German midfielder Mesut Ozil- who has gone on to become an instant success – also bring in Mathieu Flamini, Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer and Palermo goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on a season-long loan.

“City have a very strong squad, I don’t deny that. I look at my squad and I don’t envy them,” said Wenger.

Pellegrini’s squad presently boasts of the most prolific strike force in the division having scored 41 goals in 15 games, thanks to the firepower of Argentinean Sergio Aguero- the league’s second highest goalscorer with 12 goals- and Spaniard Alvaro Negredo, who joined the ‘Sky Blues’ from Sevilla for £24.5m.

Since taking charge of the Manchester club in June, the Chilean made clear his vision to transform the side into the best attack-minded team by bringing in forward Stevan Jovetic for £20m, winger Jesus Navas for £14.9m, midfielder Fernnandinho for £30m.

Despite only signing a defender, Martin Demichelis for a reported £4.2m in the summer, the side have only conceded twice in the league in seven home games and have not lost any.

Wenger’s men have only lost once on the road in six top flight matches this season – at City’s local rivals Manchester United last month.

The Frenchman added: What is important is how well you play together- and on that front, I think we have done well since the start of the season.”

Coupled with their best away record, Arsenal have only conceded 11 goals in 15 matches and with Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, who have only conceded once in the last six games they have started together, likely to lead the defence; Aguero and Negredo (if included) may be up against brick wall.

Most importantly fans will have the privilege to watch the best strike force face the best defence so far in the season and Wenger expects an interesting encounter.

“We like to score goals and we like to go forward but Man City can do that as well,” he said.

“Both teams will certainly perform at the top level in defences but Pellegrini is an offensive manager. I am as well, so you should see interesting things on the offensive level.

“You need a strong defensive performance and maybe the best way to do that is to attack, for us to have the ball and not let them find their flow.”

They are five points clear at the top of the table, six points ahead of their hosts, City, who lies fourth.

Some Team News

Lukas Podolski could return to their squad after being sidelined since August with a hamstring injury, but Bacary Sagna (hamstring) is ruled out. Aaron Ramsey will be expected to return to the starting line-up after being restricted to a substitute appearance against Napoli.

Micah Richards sustained a hamstring injury against Bayern Munich (in the midweek) so will not feature on Saturday, and former Arsenal full-back Gael Clichy (foot) is a doubt. Yaya Toure returns after being suspended for the trip to Germany, while Pellegrini must decide whether to give England goalkeeper Joe Hart another chance in the league or keep faith with Costel Pantilimon.

Two killed, others injured in Ikere bank robbery

0

Two people were reportedly killed on Thursday evening at Ikere Ekiti, as a five-man robbery gang stormed a First bank branch in the town, carting away on undisclosed sum of money.

One of the victims was identified as a commercial motorcyclist operating in the town.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said one person was killed during the robbery attack.  It was learnt that two others were hit by bullets during the attack that lasted close to 30 minutes.

The victims (names not given) were said to be receiving treatment at a hospital.

It was learnt that the bandits trailed a bullion van conveying an undisclosed amount of money  from Ado Ekit, the state capital, to the bank in a Nissan saloon car.

The bandits reportedly demolished the security door with a dynamite in order to gain entry into the banking hall and headed straight to the strongroom.

After the operation, the  gun-wielding hoodlums were said to have shot into the air to scare he people away before escaping through the Ikere-Ogotun road.

Our correspondent gathered that motorists from  Ado Ekiti, the state capital, were taking a detour to escape being hit by stray bullets during the operation.

Those within the vicinity of the bank and residents of Ikere were said to have fled during the gun duel between the police and the hoodlums.

Members of the  Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state were reportedly booed  by the aggrieved residents in protest against the police late arrival.

Gerrard to miss festive fixtures

Liverpool captain Gerrard to miss festive

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be out of action for at least a month with a hamstring strain picked up in Saturday’s 4-1 victory over West Ham.

Gerrard limped out of the action on 56 minutes to be replaced by Lucas Leiva and underwent a scan on Monday which confirmed the extent of the injury.

The 33-year-old’s absence comes at a key time for the Reds, who lie second in the Premier League and face Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea in their next four games.

The news is also a fresh blow to Brendan Rodgers, who is already without in-form striker Daniel Sturridge until well into the New Year due to an ankle problem.

Gerrard has appeared in all 15 of Liverpool’s Premier League matches so far this season, notching three goals and six assists – the joint- highest in the division alongside Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

Pedro eager to avoid Manchester City and Arsenal

Barcelona winger Pedro admits he would like to avoid being drawn against Manchester City or Arsenal in the Champions League round of 16.

The Spain international scored in Wednesday’s 6-1 rout of Celtic at Camp Nou which saw the Blaugrana cruise into the knockout phase as group winners, and he believes the Premier League duo are the strongest sides from among the group-stage runners-up which Barca can expect to face in the next round.

“It’s fairly obvious that Manchester City and Arsenal are the strongest teams we might be drawn against, and let’s hope we have a bit of luck and avoid those two,” he told Barca TV program ‘El Marcador’.

Barca have won back-to-back games since their consecutive defeats to Ajax and Athletic Bilbao, scoring 10 goals in the process, and Pedro is pleased with both the team’s overall improvement and his own form in the past two weeks.

“We’re on the right track. We kept the intensity high from start to finish,” he said of the Celtic win. “The team is in
good shape, physically fit, and ready to perform well in the games before Christmas.

“I’m happy the way things are going, and being able to help the team. I feel comfortable, physically fitter, and
confident.”

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants Didier Drogba reunion

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants Didier Drogba
reunion

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho would be delighted to see Didier Drogba return to Stamford Bridge with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Both sides qualified for the last 16 on Wednesday, setting up a potentially emotional Blues reunion for the Ivorian, who spent eight years with the west London outfit.

The striker – signed by Mourinho in 2004 – went on to become a Chelsea legend, scoring 157 goals in 341 matches, making him their fourth-highest scorer.

In his final game for the Blues, Drogba scored an 88th-minute equaliser in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich, setting up a penalty  shootout that he eventually finished with the decisive spot kick.

When asked by reporters about the potential of playing the Turkish giants on Wednesday, Mourinho replied: “Yes, Galatasaray is difficult. The Turkish champions with ‘King Didier’. Very difficult.

“But I’d like Didier to be back here and feel what I felt. He deserves to come here and get the reception double or three times better and bigger than I had [when I returned with Inter].”

Ribery: Bundesliga the best in the world

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery believes that the Bundesliga is the best domestic championship in the world.

Last year’s Champions League final was an all-German affair, with the Bavarians beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley, while the domestic top flight reached new heights this week as four Bundesliga teams reached the knockout stages for the first time in the history of European club football’s elite competition.

Ribery, though, feels that the performances of the Bundesliga’s finest in the Europa League also underline that the German top flight is now without equal in terms of strength in depth.

“The Bundesliga’s level has developed incredibly in the past few years,” Ribery was quoted as saying by Kicker.

“The Bundesliga is undoubtedly one of the best leagues in the world and is perhaps even the very best.

“Just look at Eintracht Frankfurt’s Europa League win over Bordeaux the other day. They are the number 16 in the Bundesliga.

“This only shows that the Bundesliga teams are very strong compared to other leagues. The Bundesliga are the dominant league in Europe at the moment.”

The Bundesliga currently sits third in the Uefa Ranking, behind Spain’s La Liga and the English Premier League.

Doctors may commence fresh nationwide strike Dec. 14

President, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr.
Osahon Enabulele

President, Nigerian Medical Association, Dr.
Osahon Enabulele

The Nigeria Medical Association, the umbrella body for all
medical and dental doctors in the country, on Wednesday
hinted that its members might commence an indefinite
strike on Saturday, December 14.
The association said the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi
Chukwu, “should be held responsible for any crisis that could
erupt in the health sector.”
The President of NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, in a statement
obtained by The PUNCH on Wednesday, said the latest
threat to commence strike followed an alleged breach of an
agreement reached with the Federal Government especially
on some health sector challenges, workplace conditions and
the conditions of service of doctors.
He recalled that on September 2, 2013, the NMA issued a
21-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the
issues tabled before it.
Enabulele said, “On account of the foregoing, it may be
difficult to guarantee further extension of the grace period
and consequently, industrial harmony in the health sector,
especially as the December 14, 2013 deadline issued to the
Federal Government to concretely resolve the demands of
the NMA draws closer.
“Therefore the NMA most distressingly alerts the entire
nation about the imminent collapse of health services
across the entire country given the apparent levity and lack
of concrete commitment so far exhibited by the government
through the Federal Ministry of Health.”
According to Enabulele, efforts by the NMA to engage the
leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health “even at this
eleventh hour collapsed following the unserious approach
