UK Foreign Affairs Committee Publishes Damning Report Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Case

The United Kingdom Foreign Affairs Committee has published a damning report against its government’s handling of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB’s case.

This followed evidence provided by Kanu’s family through their lawyers, the Bindmans LLP, Blackstone Chambers & Doughty Street Chambers.

The report forwarded to DAILY POST by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, reads partly: “The Foreign Affairs Committee, has published a damning report, concluding that the UK government is failing to prevent “Abductor states” from “weaponising citizenship of British nationals for geopolitical ends”.

“The report draws on evidence provided by the Kanu family in relation to British national Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader who was abducted and tortured in Kenya by the Nigerian security forces and subject to extraordinary rendition to Nigeria in June 2021, where he has remained in detention ever since.

“The FAC’s report is a damning indictment of the government’s efforts to assist British nationals subject to serious violations abroad and unfortunately reflects the experience of Mr Kanu’s family in trying to engage the FCDO in his case.”

The report said Kanu’s family would appeal against the UK High Court judgment that the FCDO can lawfully evade reaching any conclusion on whether Kanu has been subject to extraordinary rendition.

The report pointed out recommendations to combat the failure of the UK government to assist Kanu over the violation of human rights.

The report was subjected to Kanu’s abduction and repatriation from Kenya to Nigeria in 2022.

Security agents had picked up Kanu in Kenya and subjected him to extraordinary rendition after he left Nigeria in 2017 despite his ongoing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Hits New Record Of 22%

Nigeria’s inflation rate has hit an all time high.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the inflation rate climbed to  22.04% in March 2023.

The per cent represents a 13.4 basis points increase compared to 21.91% recorded in the previous month.

It noted that food inflation was 24.45% in March 2023 from 24.35% in February 2023, while urban inflation was 23.07% and rural inflation was 21.09%.

An elderly couple have lost their lives after eating a poisonous pufferfish.

The sad incident happened in Malaysia.

The incident has now forced the daughter of the late couple to push for stronger laws to prevent others from suffering the same fate.

Ng Chuan Sing and his wife Lim Siew Guan, both in their early 80s, unknowingly purchased at least two pufferfish from an online vendor on March 25, according to police authorities in the southern state of Johor.

The same day Lim fried the fish for lunch and began to experience “breathing difficulties and shivers,” authorities said. An hour after eating the meal, her husband Ng also started showing similar symptoms, they added.

The couple was rushed to hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, and Lim was pronounced dead at 7p.m. local time .

Ng fell into a coma for eight days but his condition worsened and he died on Saturday morning, April 8, said the couple’s daughter, Ng Ai Lee, who gave a press conference at the couple’s home on Sunday before their funeral.

Commonly referred to as ‘fugu’ – the Japanese term for pufferfish, pufferfish meat is enjoyed as a highly-priced delicacy despite containing deadly poison.

The fish’s organs, as well as skin, blood and bones, contain high concentrations of a deadly poison known as tetrodotoxin. Ingestion can rapidly cause tingling around the mouth and dizziness, which may be followed by convulsions, respiratory paralysis and death, medical experts say.

Ng demanded accountability for her parents’ death and for stronger laws in Malaysia, where at least 30 species of pufferfish are commonly found in surrounding waters.

“Those responsible for their deaths should be held accountable under the law and I hope the authorities will speed up investigations,” Ng said.

“I also hope the Malaysian government will beef up enforcement and help to raise public awareness on pufferfish poisoning to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

Malaysian law prohibits the sale of poisonous and harmful food like pufferfish meat and the offense carries a fine of RM10,000 ($2,300) or a prison term of up to two years.

Despite the dangers, pufferfish is still sold at many Malaysian wet markets, experts said. “It’s considered exotic and tends to attract consumers,” said Aileen Tan, a marine biologist and director at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies.

“Once pufferfish have been cleaned and sold as slices, it is nearly impossible for the public to know the type of fish that they purchased,” Tan warned. “As for sellers, it is debatable on their (part) if they are aware (of the risks).”

“There needs to be more awareness about the risks of consuming puffer fish – maybe authorities need to look at special certifications for vendors and suppliers,” she said.

A woman has shared her story after giving birth in the toilet without realizing that she was pregnant.

She had mistaken her labor pains for constipation.

Marla McEntire, from Georgia, had no knowledge that she carried the baby for 40 weeks despite being on birth control.

The 34-year-old said that she had missed just one period during that time but dismissed it after taking a pregnancy test that came out as negative. But she ended up giving birth to her five-pound, 18-inch son – who she has since named Atlas Cohen – while on the toilet.

Marla took to TikTok to share her story, telling followers: ‘I’m 34 years old, I’ve never had a pregnancy scare before.

‘I got pregnant last May and I never showed, my stomach was squishy, my belly button didn’t pop out, no morning sickness, I never felt a kick – nothing.

‘Around January, I started having some hip pain and some stomach issues so I went to a chiropractor and went to a doctor and no one caught the fact that there was a baby in there.’

Speaking about when Atlas was born, she said: ‘That night I thought I was constipated.

‘I sent my dad to the store to get me laxatives and I went back and forth to the bathroom about five times.

‘And then on the fifth time is when Atlas came.’

Marla, who has been on birth control since she was 18, continues: ‘So I had just had Atlas in the toilet, I looked down and see that he’s alive and I yell for my dad.

‘My dad comes in there and helps me get the baby out of the toilet because obviously he is still attached at this point and it’s a little hard for me to get him out.’

She later told the New York Post: ‘I looked down in the toilet, and he is in there with water up to his ears and right under his chin, just looking back up at me, like, “Are you going to get me out of here mom?”‘

Her father, Kevin, immediately called 911 for advice and they began talking him through the next steps.

She explains: ‘The EMTs are like “okay you need to tie the umbilical cord off” but he really doesn’t feel comfortable doing that, so he takes a chip clip – like the clips you keep your potato chip bags closed with – and clips my umbilical cord with that until the EMTs get there.

‘We live in the middle of nowhere so it takes about 20 minutes for this to happen – and at this point I’m just spread eagle on the floor with my dad right there – and I’m like “what is happening right now.”

‘There was so much to process at one time.’

Marla said the bathroom ‘looked like a murder scene’ and that the father-daughter duo were trying to stay as calm as possible.

They were eventually taken to hospital for check ups – and both mother and baby are doing well.

Marla has since told the publication: ‘There are still some issues with the paternity of the father that I’m dealing with.’

The new mother said that she is grateful for her family and friends who banded together to help buy baby equipment and supplies needed at such short notice.
