Know Your Rights Nigeria simplifies all human rights in English and Pidgin languages with platforms where trained lawyers can respond to human rights issues that arise in peoples’ daily lives and where Nigerians and Non-Nigerians who reside in Nigeria can report abuse of their rights.

While speaking at the National Human rights Conference 2016 which held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Lagos, Nigeria, Mr. Adeola Austin Oyinlade; United Nations Peace Ambassador explained that the App was simplified in simple English and Pidgin languages understandable to the ordinary people on the street.

According to Oyinlade, “we have simplified your rights in a way that you can access them at any time where necessary with just a push of button in your palms. Many of us fear any form of contact with law enforcement agents. This is largely borne out of ignorance of our rights under the law and in which many people had been exploited. This app and the web version of “Know Your Rights Nigeria” will keep you fully abreast of the whole gamut or corpus of rights available to you under the law in force in Nigeria, equip you with the information needed to stand in order to defend yourself against any infraction.” Oyinlade further explained that the content of the App includes Peoples’ rights at the Police station, how to write a Statement at the police station against being implicated, rights of Landlords and Tenants, documents that one needs before buying properties among hundreds of rights that will educate Nigerians and Non-Nigerians alike on the scope of their rights and responsibilities.

‘Know Your Rights Nigeria’ has an engagement forum where the App users can ask lawyers any question on human right issues that arise in their daily lives. The Legal Team will respond to human rights issues without any monetary charge. According to Mr. Oyinlade, “the Legal team can only respond to fundamental human rights issues. We don’t respond to business or profit making legal issues such as contracts, banking, shipping or other commercial/corporate law issues as people who need such legal services may need to contact their lawyers.

The mobile App also has a platform where people can report abuse of their rights. A reporter can hide his identity if he so desires. The App also provides the emergency contacts of some government Agencies that can enforce abuse of peoples’ rights in Nigeria. The Agencies include the National Human Rights Commission, the Complaint Response Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, the Human Rights Desk of Nigerian Army, Consumer Protection Council, Lagos State Traffic Management (LASTMA) among others. On the App, people who need services of lawyers but cannot afford one as a result of financial constraint can also access contacts of Legal Aid Council in order to get justice.

While commending Constitutional Rights Awareness and Liberty Initiative (CRALI); the organization that powered the App for also making a provision for Non-Android phone users within and outside Nigeria to access the web version of “Know Your Rights Nigeria” through www.knowyourrightsnigeria.com, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, Darcy Zotter; Public Affairs Officer of U.S Consulate, Lagos, Dr. Olu Ayeni; Attorney General of Ogun State, Mr. Ajibade Kamaldeen; Attorney General of Kwara State, President of the Nigerian Bar Association represented by the Mr. Adesina Adegbite among other dignitaries commended CRALI for unveiling such App for the benefit of the people without any monetary charge.
